Biography

Joy Steiner grew up climbing trees, skinning her knees, catching fireflies, and tasting the freedom of uncluttered southern summers which lasted forever. Her parents encouraged her creativity with plenty of art supplies, music, and a weekly trip to the library for an armful of books. These influences helped Joy develop a fancy for stories, and a desire to encourage the imagination of others.

Joy graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a music education degree, then she was off to see the world. She traveled Europe with the Continental Singers, staying each night with a local family, and broadening her mind to appreciate many cultures. Joy later settled in Wyoming, where she taught music for the small country schools nestled in the valleys beneath the Grand Tetons. Winter in the mountains was different than anything Joy had experienced, but she was enchanted. In every season, the mountains captured her heart and inspired an enduring love for the earth’s wild places and the creatures who inhabit them. These memories guide Joy to create stories which honor the earth.

Joy earned a Master of Arts in Early Childhood Special Education from the University of Wyoming. This gave her a solid background in child development, an invaluable tool for developing storytelling programs with a particular age in mind. Joy learned how delightful it is to let the children lead the way. They remind her to view the world through eyes of wonder and possibility.

Joy and her family live in Idaho where the desert meets the mountains. She uses storytelling to promote literacy and compassion. She collaborates with her husband, a professor of children’s literature, to make enticing books an essential part of her storytelling. Joy is an author, musician, and award winning recording artist. She believes that each person must do their part to make this world a good place to live. Each of us can make a difference.
